OverHeating 89

Have an 89 325 ic that was in storage for about 6 mos, took it out and was driving without issue for a few days, after about a 20 min drive, I stopped at home and left the car idling outside for 5 minutes (longer than i was expecting), when i returned, the car was overheating and steam was spraying into the footwell by the gas pedal. I let it cool off and checked the coolent level, which was now low (not sure how full it was before). I added some more coolent, but it's still overheating after running for more than a few mins.

What could this be? Is it anything simple enough to try to remedy on my own?

Thanks in advance for advice.

Steam inside the car? sounds like something to do with your heater core as that is the only place coolant enters the car.

Overheating could be caused by: Blown head gasket (look for milkyness in the oil)

Faulty thermostat (stays closed so no circulation) - need to remove to test.
Faulty water pump - ditto.
Cracked or blocked hoses.
leaky radiator
faulty heater core - most liekly scenario for you.
