Overheating

My '91 525i with 250,000+km overheated last night just before I got home. I managed to get in my driveway luckily.

I'm not much of a gear head but I will ask the obvious: What could have caused the sudden rise in temperature?

Some history of my car:
- noticed that I was losing coolant for the past few months. Had to top up a litre or so every 500km. Noticed a month ago that the upper rad hose was leaking due to a crack. Coolant would drip on one of the pulleys after I shut off the car. Replaced it but was still losing coolant. No leaks after replacing the upper rad hose.
- I suspect I am burning coolant and was told that was bad for the engine. Was asked to check the exhaust colour and smell. Seemed ok to me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey Overheater!

If you lost your heat at the same time it sounds like your thermostat may have stuck in the closed position... find out the last time it was changed on your car if it has not been changed in a while you should start there! It is pretty easy to change and most places stock it for about $25.
