oxygen sensors

My '95 540 started running terribly - would die when cold and shuck like a washing machine all the time. Check engine light was on and codes showed both oxygen sensors. I replaced them both and cleared the codes, but still got one bad sensor code. I had a crack in the intake bellows, between the air filter and the intake and had ordered the part, but it took about 10 days. When that was replaced, I cleared the codes and it's running smoothly with the same oxygen sensors in it. The other strange thing, is Bavarian Automotive, Bosch, and a couple of other sources, all showed different Bosch part numbers for that car. Nobody agreed on the 95 model with manual tranny. But I'm going to run it until I get a code, hopefully another 60K. Lesson, check for leaks under the hood before replacing oxygen sensors.

The problem is, with that hole in the bellows the car was getting extra air in that was not metered. The car was running lean, and thats why when the O2s were repalced the code still came up. Good to hear you fixed it!

Yes, it has 2 and they're identical. I replaced them both because I was getting codes for both.. Now I'm getting no codes...knock on wood.

After 1 month of running great, the problem has shown back up, but probably worse. It won't get over 60 MPH with the pedal to the floor. I'm going to put new oxygen sensors in again, but different ones. As I said, depending on which source you ask, you get 3 different answers for which sensors are the correct ones for this thing. Any other ideas?

What grade fuel are you using?

I'm not sure the confusion... the 540i with a manual transmission is bosch O2 sensor part number 13522, and for automatics it is 13523. The difference most likely is the length of the wires. That's all you need!

Yeah i think I am having the same problem on the '99. It cold starts horribly and the check engine light is on. Took it to the "stealer" and they ran the codes(for free) and it said an "intermittant spark plug failure....ALL 6!!! So I promptly went out and bought brand new plugs directly from Bosch and replaced them...cars seems to be running a bit better and no engine light(BMW had reset it for me). Yesterday the check engine light came on AGAIN.....my exhaust note seems to be a loooot deeper and pronounced of late...soo I am thinking that there is a potential hole somewhere in my exhaust setup....would that cause me to run rough and have a check engine light? I currently use 100octane fuel...

I run 89 octane as recommended by the owner's manual. I've only had the car a short time, but the previous owner said he would alternate between 89 and 86 octance.

My car is considerably older 90 525i, but I had the same issue....I just knew it was the sparks or the filter, turns out it was the Air flow meter/Mass air flow meter (I get confused). My mechanic tricked it with a code and its' doing better but it still, especially in traffic, gets choked up and doesn't accelerate as efficiently as before, just my .02, but check that just to be on the safe side. I think still the Bimmers always indicate "check engine" when there is an emissions issue.
