I am looking for digital photo editing software and not sure what to get. I have primarily used a Nikon F-100 35mm and on occasion have photos downloaded to CD. I just purchased an Olympus C-5050 digital and the software that came with the camera is weak at best. I am looking for other software. I notice people referring to photo shop, is that the PhotoShop by Adobe, the one that runs $500-$700? If so is there anything cheaper that still has some quality features. Thanks, Bryan.

If you want to go the legal route, PaintShop Pro is pretty darn good. I used that for years until I got PhotoShop. Depending on the version, it's under about $100 (I think) and I think older versions might even be posted as shareware.

Kirby:
In your opinion, is PhotoShop Pro worth the money? I have a credit from another system that will more than cover the cost of PhotoShop so I may go with this. Just want to be sure it is worth the money.

Get photoshop if you have the money -- if you decide the learning curve is too steep or if it's not right for you, just return it or sell it on ebay.

You wrote PhotoShop Pro but I think you are asking about PaintShop Pro?

Well, that's both easy and difficult to answer. For a casual user, Paint Shop Pro is an excellent value. It can do a lot of the stuff you want to do, but not everything, especially if you want to do a lot of layer based editing, or automatic special effect tools. Adobe PhotoShop easily wins in these areas. I feel that some of PaintShop Pro's tools are not as intuitive to use compared to PhotoShop, but once you plow thru it you can figure it out. There are a few web sites and at least one 3rd party book for PaintShop Pro. Of course, there is a ton of support and books out there for PhotoShop. I teach Photoshop a local campus (evening continuing Ed) and use these 2 books:
Intro - Adobe PhotoShop Classroom in a Book - Perfect for beginners
Advanced - Adobe PhotoShop 7 Wow Book (Don't buy this book if you are a newbie to PhotoShop!)

Is PaintShop Pro worth the money? Absolutely. Amazon has it for $55 after rebates.

There is an eval version available for download at their web http://www.JASC.com. Try that out and see what you think. Then you can decide if you really need PhotoShop. On the other hand, if you are looking to add a skill to your resume for career reasons, PhotoShop is the industry standard and the way to go.

As bahnstormer mentioned, there is a student price at many colleges. For example, Penn State can sell it for about $250 to registered students.
