Has anyone seen that segment of "America's Wildest Police Chases" where it involves the LT1 Police Camaro and the E30 M3? I downloaded it last night and it makes me wonder why we don't use the M3 as a cop car here in the US. Seriously, if any of you guys find it and download it. It shows the full potention of that car. Totally wicked.

Eh, I'm just rambling here...[thumb]

Uuhhh, actually, the cop car's Camaro is a 5.7 liter V8.
The E30 M3 that the 15-year-old was driving was also supercharged...so it was not a normal E30 M3. But yeah, the kid sooo would have gotten away if the car didn't break down.

The M3 wasnt supercharged. This happened in 1996 when I first moved here. It happened on I-435/470. The reason they said it had 240hp is the morons that work for John Walsh (also a moron) looked up a BMW M3 and got the stats from a 96 M3.

It also didnt break down. It was a joyride in daddy's car. So they just went to the owners house and found the kid. The car made it home.

Ryan, in the video, you specifically see the car brake down. That is how the cops actually caught him...he was actually almost out of sight, but then the car just stopped and apparently it broke down. Also, in the video, they say something along the lines that the M3 was supercharged...they actually mention it. Now I thought they meant that the supercharger was done aftermarket since they brought it up, but I guess they made a mistake and the car was just a normal E30 M3 and not supercharged??? Maybe we are thinking of two different E30 M3 police chases???
In any case, who's the girl standing in front of your car in the profile? Can I have her?

watch the video again. The break down video footage is a replay of when he turned in the median. I think you can see a derrik and a billboard in the background in the same spot. Its the video from the camaro almost rear-ending the M3.

Also look at the last part of the video, they cut out the tmiestamp and speed info. They did that so you couldnt see that it was in fact old video from the camaro (who couldnt have taken the video of it breaking down because the Camaro wrecked). There is no way a regular Ford could have kept up with him, they max out at 130 and literally can only do that for about 20 minutes before the tranny starts to die.

Its a TV show, they make shit up so it looks like the cops always win. How many incredible police chases did they show where the cops lost?

It is the same video used over. There's a cop on the right side of the road in the distance with its lights on that you can see in both parts of the video. They even slowed it down so it looked like the kid was slowly stopping instead of radically braking on the highway.

They say that the kid sped up to 150 mph. How fast can an M3 go?

Cop cars go faster than the regular "civilian versions", atleast, my friend's dad's malibu (i think?) cop car (yes...he's a cop) handles and drives faster/better than the kind you can buy off the lot.

You do alright in your analysis of the footage until you part from fact and start to speculate. I agree with some of your observations, like the "break down footage" does appear to be the same video from when the M3 first slammed the brakes. And yes the TV producers cut out the Eyewitness Video Stamp Information. But then you ask "who could have taken a video of it breaking down because the Camaro wrecked", simple, any other police unit with a video system. Then you make claims about "regular" Fords. Those were not "regular Fords", and having driven one I know first hand that they will do better than 130 MPH and we never had a transmission problem with them. Then you really mess up when you say they "make Sh*t up", who is they? What a TV producer does with the film once he has it in his possession is beyond the control of the police. And the answer to you second question is rarely. Mostly because there is one suspect vehicle (usually) and anywhere from 1 to hundreds of police vehicles. See if the pursuing officer crashes or breaks down he can call numerous area agencies and basically has a never ending supply of police cars, therefore the suspects chances of escape are slim to none, he has no one to call for another vehicle.

Do not be so quick to judge the "cops" until you have walked a mile in their shoes. The "M3" driver needs to lose his license forever.

in the October, 2003 issue of Sport Compact Car, they do performance tests on the cop cars. The Chevrolet Impala cop car has a top speed of 126mph. The Dodge Intrepid cop car has a top speed of 136mph. The Ford Police Interceptor has a top speed of 128mph. The AM General Hummer cop car has a top speed of 85mph. The Chevrolet Camaro has a top speed of 159mph.
At the end of the video, they say that the BMW "brakes down" and that was the only way they caught him.
Ryan, please help me out, tell me who that girl is in the pic of your signature...she looks tasty.

I wasnt dogging cops, in no way did I put down cops in my post. Read it.

I was putting down a senastionalized Fox TV show. A TV show that has never shown a chase with the cops losing. They lost, and then they went and got the kid at home. It was daddys car. Daddy was a club member, the kid might have bene to DE events before this.

Cop cars are not much different in performance. Interceptor packs change the shift points and engine programming. The gearing is identical. I know 4 cops that can tell you flat out that the Crown Vics are not built for pirsuits, that is why they have Camaro SSs and Mustang GTs. Crown Vics are designed to be moblie support platforms.

Its a local story that has made its round for like 8 years now.

Vics suck for police cars

Speaking from driving them both in and being involved in pursuits with the Vic and the older Chevy Caprices the Vics are not the car you want when your chasing some jackass.

Caprices handle and perform much better and most cops will tell you the same. Where I work (pretty good size city of 500,000 or so) we dont have mustang GT, Camero etc. The Caprices are faster and perform alot better in most all conditions. Nothing like a chase to get the blood flowing and remember unless you ditch the cops fast you wont win no matter what you drive.

You cant out run a radio!!! To bad they stop making the police version of the Caprice and most cops wish they still did. (although there is a rumor that they are thinking of bringing them back)

And Caprices dont explode when they are rear ended unlike the VIC which several cases of officers dying from this.

save the doughnut jokes please
