I just got my X3 about 3 weeks ago.. we are planning a trip to California and I need a dvd system in my ride so my 3 yr old doesn't drive me nuts, BMW Wants almost 800 for the dvd player and 1200 for each screen. I found another company that makes DVD Systems for BMW for 1200 Dollars I get NEw Head rests with screens and a DVD UpRight Mountable dvd player with tuner and 5 video inputs a much better deal but bmw said they wont install it because its not a BMW DVD player they said that it will void the Warranty They even Said that " A non BMW Product could Fry The cars computer" I told him he's full of Sh_T but I don't want to void it... What should I do.. Can I get around this??? My dvd package is here today or tomorrow and we leave in 4 days...

They can't void the warranty simply because you installed aftert market products. As long as it is installed correctly to industry accepted standards (wire size, fused, etc.) , you'll be fine.

Print out the Magnuson Moss Act, take to Dealer and have Dealer show you how this aftermarket equipment would void the warranty.

Link to FTC site

I don't blame the dealer for not wanting to install non-BMW equipment, but you should be able to find a good local shop that can perform the install.

Okay, that sounds like a lot of $$$. I would consider purchasing a portable CD Laptop with a converter and place it on the cente console. We did this with our Apple G4 and it work out great with a splitter for the headset. ( we have twin boys) ...good luck

Just to ellborate on what Kirby said:
Obviously if you have problems with the aftermarket DVD player/system, you can't take it to your BMW dealership to fix it (but you can take it to the shop that installed it).

Your warranty is NOT void just because of the aftermarket products. Here is how it works:
Let's say you have the DVD system installed and then your sunroof stops working. As the sunroof has absolutely nothing to do with the aftermarket DVD player, BMW will just fix the problem for free under warranty.

Only IF a problem occurs and is caused by the aftermarket part(s) (which BMW has to prove), then you have to pay out of your own pocket for the dealership to fix it.

I do not understand why all car dealerships always tell customers that their warranty is void as soon as they install aftermarket products of any kind....it is complete BS.
