Power steering stiff

Since cold weather set in my power steering is very hard to turn until the car is very well warmed up, any suggestions?

This was happening with me recently, check your power steering fluid that's most likely the problem.

Its full. I wonder if I can thin it out with something?

steering rack is probably gummed up. Wouldn't hurt to swap it out and flush the system.

It could very well be that the power steering fluid filter has never been changed and is gummed up with crud resulting in restricted fluid flow, especially when cold. In my 325, the filter is part of the reservoir - built into the bottom of it so you have to replace the reservoir to replace the filter. Some BMWs had separate replaceable filters. Not sure which version your car would have.
