1987 325, both windows suddenly quit working at the same time--Assuming it is probably a fuse since the problem is with both windows rather than just one, I got a printout from my mechanic showing the fuse layout, replaced the 30amp fuse in the the fuse box under the hood but it didn't fix the problem. The grid I have shows that there is also a 25 amp circuit breaker associated with the power windows, but I can't find on my diagram or in the car where a circuit breaker goes. My regular mechanic doesn't know where it is. Is it in the console where the power window buttons are? Behind the dash somewhere? HELP!

I havn't got my manual in front of me and I don't remember offhand where all the relays etc are located. It is not under the console where the switches are so you can cross that off your list. I think there is a relay in the fuse box under the bonnet. I'll try and remember to check my manual tonight as I have the page marked as I was tracing a few wires for an alarm installation last night. If someone else knows feel free to jump the gun - otherwise I'll try get back to you tomorrow.

Ive had problems with my power windows as well. For me, both stopped working when i was putting the window up and driving over some bumps. I found that when i flicked a wire tap on the ground wire, they would work, and then stop when more bumps were hit. I removed the wiretap and soldered the ground wires, which fixed it for me. I doubt the tap was original, but the window ground should be above the brake pedal, and is worth checking out. Hope this helps

I went to look in the manual but got distracted and ended up spending last night swapping out the suspension set-ups in my two e30's to get a more optimum combination (a job I've been meaning to do for weeks).

However - whilst I think about it, do you have the main "kill" switch for the windows on your centre console like on most 4-door cars? If you do, a loose terminal here could be the culprit as it works by simply breaking the circuit to the window switches - a loose terminal on the switch would have the same effect as the switch being in the "off" position.

Another question - do the window switches light up? if yes - then they have power and the problem is between the siwtch circuit and the window motor.
