Problems with my black paint

Hi!

I just brought my jet black 325i about 2 months ago. It came with many light and some deep scratches on the body. The worse of the damage are 2 two inch spots of what appears to have been caused by bird poop that has been left for too long so I think it has eaten thru the clear coat. I'll post a pic later on.

I was referred to a local detailing place that sells "professional waxes" and they came out to the car with this bottle of PRO Clear Cut thing and tried to take out the bird droppings. It didn't work very well, he said it's because the surface has wax on it. (I polished and waxed it last week) He then tried it on another spot where there was a stone chip. The stone chip didn't disappear (maybe looked a bit better) but he was so rough with rubbing the surrounding paint that it left microscratches on it. I came home and was able to take out the microscratches with wax (most of it).

He wants me to strip off the wax on the car and then use this Pro Clear Cut and then polish and then wax. What do you guys think? Will this take care of my bird dropping and other scratches?

Also, since I'm wax my first black car by hand, I have a lot of ?swirls? left over from waxing. How do you wax a black car without leaving this swirling/residue?

Swirls and micro-marring are most commonly put into the paint during washing and drying the car, as well as just daily driving.

To prevent this from happening, I recommend high quality products that are user friendly.
I would start with a selection of quality microfiber towels, applicators, mitts, etc.

Your next step would be to "remove" the imperfections, your wax is only covering them.
I polish such as Einszett is VERY easy to work with and is recomended for it's performance and ease of application and removal. A polisher such as a Dewaly DW443 is recommended for any type paint correction.

Protecting the paint with a good, easy to apply and remove wax or sealant is also a must.
Zaino has very good durability, Einszett Glanz Synthetic Wax is the easiest to apply/remove product I have ever used. You simply wipe it on, wait 30 seconds, wipe it off. It is almost as easy to use as a Quick Detailer, but with much greater protection, as it is a synthetic, not carnuba.

The detailers you went to do not seem to be very knowledgable of their craft or products.
If the compound will not remove wax, how do they think it will remove an imperfection in the paint? (BTW, the link did not work on this end)
Pro makes good products and ANY compound will remove wax, These guys for some reason did not know that???
Paint is MUCH thicker, harder and durable than any wax or sealant.
Wax and sealants are what we call a "sacrificial layer" of protectant on the paint.
Contaminants will first have to "attack" the wax/sealant before reaching the paint.
It is your paint's first line of defence.

If you would like more info, you are welcome to email me:)

The only way I know of to remove swirl marks, bird poo stains, and/or minor scratches is to have the paint professionally buffed. It takes a lot of practice to perform this correctly, and I highly recommend thoroughly checking out references of any detail shop before you hand your car over to them.

As for the care after a good buff job, Wayne's correct. A good selection of the higher priced cotton towels along with a good selection of quality micro-fiber towels will aid in reducing the possibility of new swirl marks appearing.

Vlad,
You seem to have experience detailing..., Have you tried the Einszett polishes with a Dewalt 443 and quality pads?
If not, I think you would really be impressed at what it can do:)
Of course, it will not do what a rotary can do, but it does remove minor imperfections without the risk of burning the paint for the "weekend warrior" :)

[xx(] I do it all the time..... But it always comes out nice.
Sure it does. Any dish soap cuts grease (and wax). So it gets the car nice and clean. You don't need to buy some NASA tested product.

But if you don't get a new coat of wax on it after that...the next bird dropping is going to be laying directly on your clear coat...on it's way to the paint!

A good friend of mine runs a detailing shop, I hang around there and "help out" a bit, just to pick up some pointers. Admittidly, I have not tried the Einszett brand as yet, but would like to. As for the DeWalt, what differences are there between that and the Porter-Cable polisher? Just as a general observation, it almost appears that the "dust collection" plastic housing could get in the way a bit. In a quick search, the best price I could find for the DW443 was $139, not too much more that a Porter-Cable.

Vlad,

The Dewalt has-
1- More power
2- More speed
3- actually builds some heat, making it better at removing paint imperfections.

Both Dewalt and PC are variable speed.

The ONLY thing I do not like is the backing plate, it is not a "universal plate" like the PC, you have to use a Dewalt plate, but no real big deal, how often do you chance the backing plate?

The dust bag is removable and I recommend doing so as you have noted the reason:)

I have the PC also, but it is now "semi-retired" as, IMO the Dewalt does a much better job.
I will have a limited supply for sale in a week or two.
It will be priced at $129 and Free Shipping (that would be a good time to try Einszett or the towels, as you would have no additional shipping costs:)
Just wanted to see how well they sell, as it is not the machine I grab first for minor imperfections, swirls, etc.
It will not do what a rotary will do, but you won't burn your paint either:)
It is the closest I have found to a rotary performance that is still safe for the "weekend warrior", (or Pro for that matter), and gives good results...
Everyone is familiar with the PC, but not the 443.
