I would lke to change the programming options for my key memory and car memory in my 2001 540i. Everywhere I can find info on this topic it's stated that you need to bring the car to the dealer to have the options in programming changed. I would like to change the options myself. There must be a programmer on the market to accomplish this...?? Anyone know such a programmer and/or cable and software using a laptop to make these changes? All programers I can find are for service interval reset and OBDII items. Examples of things I'd like to change are: daytime running light (on or off), audible indication of car locking with key remote, doors locking or not once viehicle moves, etc. Is there a separate connection (other than round diagnostic port under the hood and other than the OBDII connector unde the dash on drivers side) for changing these functions? Where can I buy the right programmer/software?

i agree. i've had key re-programming done on my 323.
the security software is proprietary so you cannot find it on the open market.

the re-program cost for changing the alarm notification is about $400 (if your car's alarm system is not activated). The daytime running lights and other stuff will be included in that cost. my 323 did not have an alarm kit installed - hence no chirps or lights flash when locking or unlocking.

the daytime running lights do NOT look good on the e39 5-Series.
trust me, i did it and took it back the same day to have it reversed.

If i recall, it elimated my ability to go angel eyes "without" turning the headlights full-on. basically, you'll loose the ability to have use your parking lights to achieve the angel eyes look you see when you're running in the "parking lights" mode because the high beams-in-low-mode are ALWAYS ON. That's why you never see anyone with that config - it sucks.

hope this help you.

Thanks for your advice! I have an appt tomorrow for some other service at the dealer, so I'll check on price to change a few memory things. Thanks for the heads-up on the DRL! I just hate it when I can't change something myself and am forced to pay someone to do it for me.....

no prob, i know what you mean.

when i saw the DRL, i asked how do i get my angel eyes when i want them - he said i couldn't as the high-beams (on low power) would always be on, so if i wanted the rings to illuminate, i'd have to turn the regular lights on. no way - and to this date, i've never seen a 5 or 7-series with the DRL option in use. however, i see alot of 3s with that config.

Enjoy.
