I planning on buying a 1985 BMW 325e with 106,000 miles for 950 dollars. First is this a good deal for the car? Second, the current owner informed me that he was driving it a few day ago and ran over a large pot hole. He says now the speedo some times dies between 5 and 10 MPH then come back to life. What could be causeing this problem? Simple fix or symptom of a larger problem? Thank you in advance/

that sounds like a really good deal because the milage is so low. if the car looks and feels alright, go for it. I'm not exactly sure where the speedo sensor is, but it probably just got knocked loose.

Sounds like a great deal if the car is in decent shape and not in need of a bunch of work. I paid $1500 for my '87 with over 200,000 miles on it and thought that I got a great deal. Have it checked out by an independent BMW mechanic that is experienced with E30s before buying it - it's an hour of labor well-spent.

The speedo problem is probably a loose connection at the speed sensor pickup. This sensor is located on the back of the differential - it is a rubber boot over it - you can take the rubber boot off and check/clean the wire connections. If you have the car inspected, tell the mechanic to take a look at the connection as part of the inspection. If the connection at the differential is good, it's probably a flaky connection in the instrument cluster.
