I bought this radio

it works fine, but it does not turn on / off with the ignition. I have to manualy switch it on/off. It looks identical to the one I took out and it operates my factory CD changer too. How / what do I need to do to make the radio sync up to my ignition

does it hold the radio presets? if it doesnt for some reason the 2 power wires are possibly around the wrong way you have one power wire which will power up the unit the ignition wire and a memory wire which holds the presets were you set them including if the unit is left on. this is just a guess but is usually the case did you just plug it into your car or did you have to wire it in

I've got a question. When you installed it were there both a 3 pin and 6 pin connector to the changer or just a 3 pin?

E39, 2002, 525i. I have a similar problem. The existing radio worked up to a point and then became a 'stand-alone' unit. Any ideas?

You might want to go into the advanced settings of the radio and see if you can find an issue http://www.bimmernav.com/advanced.htm If you do not have nav, you can do the same thing with the MODE button

In the end I took the car to the local BMW dealerhip. They have no idea either and sent the radio in to a 'reputable radio repair shop'. Luckily this is covered under my motorplan. Will share the outcome as soon as I have the radio back - 2 weeks MINUMUM wait!
