Could be a lot of things in that area:
- broken transmission mount
- broken exhaust hanger
- rotted insulation on the header pipe
- loose heat shield

or worse:
- bad guibo
- bad ujoint
- bad center bearing/hangar

If it happens that often and noticeable, it should be easy to find. Did you climb under the car, or have a shop look at it? That's step one!

On the E36 (not totally sure about yours, but should be similar) There is a heat shield that runs from the transmission to the diff. It has six or 8 screws. It is aluminum and can tear or bend and cause rattles.

On the E36, the center bearing is above the heat shield, you can't see it until you remove the shield.
