Hi,[???1]
I recently bought a used 528I from a guy who sold I think some young guy who has done some pretty type of power upgrade.
What I am asking for are there any other people on the forum who own one cause basicly I'm asking for advice on a few things.
The vehicle as sold to me was a e30 2.8ltr engine coupled to a 735I 4 speed auto with lockup clutch in forth.
Highway gearing and 14" rims by 6.6 wide. 35mph is only turning the engine at a very mild 1,200rpm. with the engine still able to power at 7,000rpm where the redline is just under six I have not taken it past there but I am told the Bimmers have a rev limiter but mine does not appear to work..
It gets really good fuel consumption on the highway and on the highway if you put your foot down it get to 160Km or 100mph from 60mph in like four seconds as it drops down to second gear then third at around 90mph.
My question is do other BMW's go that well....
0 to 60 is about 8 sec but from there on it flies.. and I'm returning about 186km to 15 litres of fuel.. on the highway. thats just under 4 gallons.
I Looked at the Ign system today and found some silicone on the outside of the rotor button I am thinking that that rotor is the limiter. Can the bmw engine take the 7000 or should I just let sleeping dogs lie.
My Mechanic says he has never driven a E28 that went that quick so seeing I am touching unknown space here I thought I'd ask..
Kindest Regards Aquaro

Otherwise I'm Very impressed with the old beast.. I only bought it as a highway tourer so I can get to work and back. thats about 150miles round trip each working day..
The photo is a likeness of my car but it is not mine

I wouldn't recommend doing 7000rpm... not too safe for the cams. The limiter is in the chip in the ECU under your dashboard and has probably been swapped for a performance chip. Not too familiar with a E28 528i in North America, just with the 528e... which the is low reving and even when chipped won't rev to 7000rpm. Even if it did, the peak torque would have past at 4000rpm.
You'll find that most BMW's (other than the small 4cylinders) cruise very nicely on the highway and get pretty decent milage (8litres per 100km) if all is running smoothly electronically.
Speaking of electronics, You'll learn not to trust your gauges at higher speeds.
