remote question

I just purchased a1998 5sp M3 sedan. The car came with three keys and a valet key, but no remote. Did these cars come with separate remotes, or did they have keys with the remotes incorporated in them?

Yeah no remotes on the latter model BMW's. The keyless entry is built into the keys.
