i own a 1997 528i (e39) and it is in need of new rear brake pads and a new clutch. my funds are limited and i cant afford the 140 dollar bentley repair manual. i was wondering if anyone could help me find some sources for the job. also i heard that there is a piece that keeps you from "popping" the clutch on the 525, 528, 530, and 540 but it is not on the m5. is there a way to remove that piece so that i can "pop" the clutch. any info would be greatly appreciated.

For a repair source, look on ebay for service & repair CDs. I just bought one for $25- I'm suppose to get it in a couple of days, so I will let you know if it is worth it. An online source for repair information is www.540i6.com. The sight is dedicated to the E39 540, but many of the items cross over. I am somewhat in the same boat. My car has 120K mi and I beginning to do my own repairs. Also try www.e39.com.

Thanks for the link Marinakorp. That is exactly what I was looking for. To install the part I will have to drain the hydrolic system, install, refill, and bleed. Correct? I love this website! Thanks BMWBoard!!!

I finally received the CDs I bought on EBay. They are copies of the original EPS and TIS. Blow-ups with all the parts and part numbers and info on service and repair. VERY NICE TO HAVE.

Do they actually show you procedures on how to perform service labeling all the tools needed, torque specs, etc? I found a set with 6 discs for 45 bucks. How does that compare to what you got your discs for? Once again, thanks for the updates.
