Reverse lights

I recently inherited a 1986 325e, 5 sp. with 186,000 miles. It is in really good shape outside and immaculate inside. Despite a few quirks this car runs like a champ, plenty of power and fun to drive.

I took the car to get inspected a few weeks ago and to my surprise it passed emissions, they overlooked the star in the line of vision on the windshield and the drivers side inner doorhandle I rigged by stealing the trim from one of the back doors.

What didn't pass was the reverse lights, no biggie I thought, some bulbs or a fuse maybe. Well after checking all fuses and replacing both bulbs the next step was to replace the neutral safety switch. After an afternoon in the cold under the car up on jackstandsand a lot of cursing I finally swapped the part.

Still no reverse lights! Any suggestions?

Is there a lot of slop in the shifter? If so, the wiring from the reverse light switch can get pinched and frayed/cut since it runs up through the shifter boot. Might be worth taking a look at it - pop the shifter boot off inside the car and take a look.
