Hello all, My 84 325E has an issue, on start up it runs rough will idle but very roughly. Also the exhaust smells of fuel. The O2 sensor is new and the exhaust is not that old. After warming up runs fine, but until it is warm it smokes a little bit and only smells of fuel not oil. Any suggestions on what this may be?

Welcome to the board!
Does your engine have any serious vacuum leaks?
purhaps your fuel injectors are unserviceable and causing a rich start up mixture - cold start valve, and or faulty maf.
have you replaced simple things like your fuel filter? more info dude!

Well I have not replaced the fuel filter although it is only about a year old. Interestingly enough the car has been running better or should i say changed issues. Sometimes after coming to a stop at a light the idle lopes down to about 500RPM then jumps to about 1200RPM. I can hold it steady at 1000RPM when it is doing this. Also no smoke or anything when this is happening. It goes away as quick as it starts, by the next stop light it is running fine again. Could a Fuel pump cause this problem? There seems to be a strange noise emitting from it..although it does not seem to be lacking fuel. I have checked all the vacuum lines and they seem to be fine. Some days it does not do this at all.. Is there a way to check the MAF sensor with a multi-meter?

Anyways thanks for the previous and the future (hopefully) response and help.

Check to see what your fuel presure is using a gauge, not sure what it should be but I'm sure the other lads should chime in and tell you.
I'm really unsure what to say, you say it happens some days and then not other days?
Check your fuel presure - leaning towards a faulty presure regulator or injectors.

Probably not the fuel pump if the rough idle goes away after warming up.

Have you check the plugs for any oil leaks in the chamber? Normally if you have cold idling issues it could be a vacuum leak or coolant temp sensor. If your vacuum lines are old they can crack which cause leaks.
