I’ve recently purchased an ‘88 ix and was curious if anyone had any thoughts on the best option for replacing the factory installed rubber trunk lip spoiler --- currently, mine is looking a bit faded and has a few cracks (in the paint).

I’d be keen to hear thoughts from those that know of aftermarket availability or the best way to make the existing lip look new again --- Thanks!

I think there are screws holding that in, I guess you can always try it and if it seems too hard take it to a body shop. It will take them less than an hour to do it. [:)]

Have them repaint it, and ask if they can do anything to keep the paint from fading. I'm sure your mirrors are faded too (unless they are black)?

Before you try anything (mine was all faded too), get some "Mothers - Back to Black"

It's in a little red bottle at pepboys and does WONDERS on the mirrors, spoiler, and the trim all around the car.
Here's a crappy example of the difference it makes...crappy pics and I know its probably not as drastic of a difference as it looks - but it really really cleans up the look of the plastic and rubber parts on the car.

Before mothers back to black (few months ago...hehe)

After back to black

(and yes you can use it on all plastics of any color)

Worth the price of the product IMO

Gents...thanks for the advice! I'm new to the forum, but find all the insights and perspectives to be incredibly helpful.

Much Appreciated.

The lip is held on by nuts under the boot lid - you can take it off easily enough. I have recently prepped and painted my one which was just black and I wanted it the same colour as the car - I paid for it to be done and they did a great job!

Looks great and cost very little - take it to your local car painters for a quote.

I bought an "is" lip for my ix for $15 and ordered paint from paintscratch.com it ended up being like $50 but im still going to have paint to touch up a few other areas and it was a hell of a lot chaper then what the local body shop wanted to do it for..

eric whats up with that dent on your hood?
There from when I got it. I got the car for a steal, $3250. I've never in my life seen a 535i 5 speed with this mileage and in this condition for less than $4k. Most go for 4500 - 5,000, the better ones go for more. The guy I bought it from was rich and didn't know what he had. For that price I can deal with a few dents (and unfortunately some poorly touched up area's). It was a city car from Brooklyn so that explains a lot. Either way, mechanically it's in 10x the condition the e30 was, and the e30 was in great condition!!!
