An '81 is an e21. An '89 is an e30. You will most probably have to modify the rails on the seats to make them fit, but would be doable.

The following applies to swapping seats between different e30's: (I wrote it before realising we were talking e21's)

Yes and No.

If the car you are putting them into is a 2-door, then the front seats must also be from a 2-door as you must have the seats that fold forward so rear passengers can get in and out. This is usually a requirement by law in case of a crash.

The mount points are exactly the same though so you can put the 2-door seats in the four door. The age of the vehicle doesn't matter.

Its a similar story for the rear seats - the four-door has a slightly different shaped lower cushion to allow easier access through the rear doors. The seats are interchangeable between 2 and four door, but will look odd in the wrong vehicle.

ok thanks for your help,my seat in my 320i is really flat,but no rips ,i was also thinking about restuffing the bottom,i think i can buy the bottom stuffing,just to keep it stock,i saw the 325 i in the junkyard and it had those highback leather wrap arounds that bmw sold and i started drooling,lol-thay were flawless,i go to pick -your parts out here in so. cal and thay have so many bmw,s and most of them are really nice,most people in those junkyards are going for cheveys and jap cars,if you ever need me to keep an eye out for parts-cheep-cheep,just let me know.
