I have a 2002 BMW 530i and it ran out of gas today just as I was pulling into a gas station. After that, it began to sputter and the service engine light is on. It seems the fuel filter could be clogged, but I was unable to locate it, where is it? Also, I drove it a few hours later and it seemed to be running alright then, but the light is still on. Does that stay on, or would it reset itself if there was not a problem?

Did the same thing on my 99 540. Had to remove the battery cables for a minimum of 3 minutes (in some cases, it's recommended to touch the positive and negative cables together to clear some codes, but I think that was only with older models). This is one of the ways to reset codes that come on in the car.
I don't know where the fuel filter is on that car, but most vehicles (in general) have the filter on the fuel lines that run between the tank and the engine - under the car. Hope this helps.

Also try not to run the vehicle low on fuel as the pump is in the tank and uses the fuel as a coolant and lubricant for the pump. When you run them low and or out you will wear the pump out prematurely.
