which part? first you take off the shift knob by pulling really hard. then you take off the leather boot and then slide the rubber boot up. working from under the car, pull off the snap ring and pull the linkage out of the shifter lever ( be careful not to drop the washers on the heat shield because you will lose them). then, working from the top, use either a needle nose pliers or a screw driver and turn the white plastic bushing counter clockwise, and pull the whole thing out. then theres all the other linkage on the transmission, but i havent really looked at that.

hmm I thought you needed a special tool to get the shift lever out. Do you know of a write up anywhere on how to rebuild the linkage? Thanks

you dont 'need' a special tool but it makes the job go about 2.9 seconds faster. i have no idea how to rebuild the linkage, but i suspect you take out the old bushings and pieces that wear out, and put new ones in.
