Short Shift Options

Well, I'm getting tired of having to reach into the passenger's lap to find 5th gear, and I'd like to be able to use the cigaret lighter to charge my phone while I'm driving, so I'm going to start looking into a short shift kit... I was just wondering if anyone had anything to say about any particular option that is available.

Eric, don't you have a Z3 shifter in yours? How is it? Did that fit right in, or did you have to do some modifying?

Get the Z3 1.9l shifter, a new bushing (the little one that clips onto the ball), and new washers. there was no modifying other than the shift rod (from the transmission) did not slip easily into the shifter. I just got out my dremel and made it fit.

DEFINITELY a worth-while mod. If you have the patience and time, lower the transmission slightly (dont support it off the driveshaft) and replace the rubber bushings for all the shift linkage. My shift is very short and nice and notchy (though not too notchy), but there is like hooker's you-know-what of play in the actual shifter so its still as inaccurate as before.
