Slot under the elipsoidals

ok. now this hase bugged me for a long time. I don't know fi it is only on european models but the headlights on my 320 (elipsoidals) have this curved regtangularish slot under the actual lens.

What is it for. anyone know???

Also known as smiley's due to the fact it looks a bit like a smile.

AFAIK it was introduced due to a change in lighting regs in europe and japan but not sure exactly what or whether that is just an urban myth.

I prefer them to standard ellipsoids.
