Hello. New here, trying to find an answer to a muffler question. 1990 325i e30. It would seem that there is no easy way of getting just the muffler portion of the exhaust system. My wifes bmw has some rust on the oval muffler area and it wont pass inspection, but they say there is nothing wrong with the pipes. After looking around its damn near impossible to find a 2 pipe in muffler from a local dealer. The only way I see of doing something is to buy the whole exhaust from the cat going back. Cheapest seems to be around the 170-190$ range. Anyone ever find a cheaper way to go that might have this type of system? Trying to find a bmw that old with a good muffler in the junk yard looks like it might prove to be a bit hard.

A cat-back exhaust for $170-190 isn't bad at all... you want a new one, not one from a junk yard if you want it to pass an inspection. Most of the time the pipe will outlast the muffler and pipe isn't that expensive... if you're gunna put on a new/different muffler, you might as well have new pipe too, especially if you're paying someone to do it. If you're doing it yourself, make sure you have new gasket rings, and inspect all your hangers so you don't strand your car in the drive way. I've done my Aunt's exhaust on her E36 325is from the cat back, and it cost her about $300, and it only took me about an hour to do the job properly. I'd be happy spending $200 on a new cat-back exhuast.
