smells like candles

I've recently noticed a smell exactly like extinguished candles coming from my '97 528i when I pull into my garage. The gauges all look good and the car's running fine. Any thoughts on what this could be?

no, just had the brakes replaced. It's something that I had noticed intermittently for a while but came on really strong over the weekend. And now it's disappeared again. There was also a clicking sound in the engine that seemed to be associated with it. Also, I've noticed my vent air when driving in town and making frequent stops at stop signs/lights is hot and my outside thermometer rises but when I'm on the highway both drop. I'm starting to feel like I'm driving a demon car. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think you need to feel like you're driving a demon car, I think you're just getting worried over nothing. It's quite possible that something is burning under your hood, which I'm sure you've looked under when you smelled the candles. Did you see anything? You could have a bad valve cover gasket, and a little bit of oil is dripping down onto your exhaust manifold which in turn burns off. The clicking sound is pretty common. It's brakes cooling off.

Do you smell it anywhere besides the garage?

well, yeah, when the smell was back last weekend, I noticed it when stopped in traffic and it seemed directly connected to the clicking. Now that the smell has gone, so has the clicking. I did check under the hood and saw nothing; no smoke, nothing. And I'm also still concerned about the fresh air coming in hot through the vents. It does seem like something's burning under the hood, but the car's running like a top and the gauges all look fine. And the fact that the outside thermometer drops when on the highway leads me to think it's getting cooled when at high speeds because the temp raises when driving through town.

I had a vent motor in a 91 318is that got stuck and when you pressed the re-circulate button it would click quietly and smell like burning wires. Turns out the motor was bad and getting stuck. And I was just kidding about the candles...

did you check the air vents? the passage ways, filters, etc?

On my parents 1997 528i, the vents were only blowing hot air; it turned out that one of the vents hoses had fallen out and it was sucking air from the engine. On the 1997 528i there are two of them. In the engine bay, all the way back on both the passenger and driver's side.

Good luck.
