The other day, I was on the right lane (stopped at a red light) of a 3 lane road. The lane was about to end a little under 1/3 of a mile ahead. Naturally, I needed to get over to the middle lane at some point. To my left was what looked like a tricked out white Honda Prelude with a monster coffee-can exhaust and some outrageous aero-dynamic mods and decals. I didn't notice the Honda until a few seconds after I started accelerating away from the light. I guess he either didn't want me to pass him or was trying to race me. to the merge. So the jerk sped up so he was slightly ahead of me. After about 400 or 500 feet, I realized that I wasn't getting over to the left without passing him or slowing down to get behind him. So what do you think I did?
I felt that this wasn't going to be even close to a challenge. I heard his car shift at very high revs to stay just ahead and to the left of me. I continued down the road and never went over about 5000 or so before up-shifting, which kept us about even. To not take a chance, I decided to pass him. Needless to say, I made the Prelude pay for his rudeness by passing him at 7000 or 8000 in 3rd or 4th (I don't remember exactly).
What would you have done?
Disclaimer: There was no traffic on the road at the time. It was about 2:00 AM. The weather was fine. No animals were injured in the process.
