Snow tire advice...

I am picking up my 2004 M3 on Tuesday and wanted to know if I should buy 18" snow tires for winter or just get narrower 17" snow tires on dedicated rims. I am told 225/50/17 would provide the best traction on snow and ice. Any advice would be appreciated.

A thicker profile and smaller wheels would provide better traction, but I think an M3 with 17" wheels would just look gay (even if they are snow tires) and you'll take a big performance hit during the winter. I think you should purchase a set of Replica M3 18" wheels and purchase a set of Dunlop WinterSport M3's or Blizzak LM-22's and use that setup during the winter. It should be fairly cheap if you purchase the snow tires now and go with replica wheels (such as from http://www.aaarims.com/).
My reasoning for 18" wheels is that on most days of the winter it's not snowing (at least here in NJ/NYC that's the case) and just because you're gonna be riding on snow tires during the winter shouldn't mean you have to take such a big performance hit.

The Tirerack and several M3 owners are trying to convince me that 18" snow tires just won't work. How about getting 18" Pirelli Winter 240 SnowSport snow tires and mounting them on the stock wheels? They come in the exact stock sizes. I have a gas station that can do it across the street from me in a hurry.

yeah i think the LM-22's are gonna be your best bet.

17" is fine if you can fit them over the brakes. thats what i'd do anyways. smaller wheel, narrower tire, larger aspect ratio
