Hi all, I need a new top. I have duct tape on the back window and the top leaks at the seals. I have found very little after a 10 google party. Price is not so much of an issue, but I want to install it myself. Is the German cloth really better? The top is electric, but it's mostly broken so I do a bit of the proceedure manually. Could I convert it to manual? Autotopsuperstar, Robbinsauto, Worldupholstery, and pelican (just seals) are about all I've found. Any hints/advice/warnings/resources? Thanks so much in advance... I'd like to use the rear view mirror once again!! Sinc., Sinister

If the cloth is ok you can change the back window by itself. The seals can also be changed. Don't have any experience with any of the mentioned sites but I'm looking for seals and a back window myself.

You can get the back window on ebay. Search on BMW Convertible Window. You have to know if the window is a sew-in or a zip-in. I've replaced the zip-in myself with no problem. I've replaced the convertible top on a Volkswagen Beetle with no problems. If you're handy you should do okay.

Thanks Steve,
Yeah I'm definitely handy... certainly handy enough to avoid 2x price for an install. The window is not zippered. I'm looking into an "ultrashield" window (better uv protection). Why is a green tint a common feature? Something special, or do people just like green (I like red sunglasses). Is there anything I should check/replace while I've got the top off? I'm most likely not going to repair the auto top opener system. It's really not that difficult to do it manually, but I do have to lift and hold the back up before I press the button, which first lifts the deck cover. The rest of the electronics seem to work, but I also have to manually push the top into a fold before it goes down. Cheers, MrSinister

Are you sure it's not zippered? You can tell only from the inside. Zip in was a couple hours work by myself and would have been easier if I had someone helping. I don't know how hard it is to sew one of those puppies. I don't know how you sew it in without taking the top all the way off and using a sewing machine. I can't imagine it would be easy at all which might make me think twice about doing it myself and I have a sewing machine and have hand sewn my share of stuff.

When I bought my car a friend that owns a BMW/Porsche repair place told me it was a good thing my car had the manual top because the electric ones always had problems.

softtopguy.com is one seller. It seems fine. I am worried that there is something fundamentally wrong with the harware that will prematurely ruin this new top... something that does not occur with the manualt top. Sinister
