Spark Plugs n' Things

I hear all the time people listing Bosch platinum 4 spark plugs, if I understand correctly these have the 4 contact points. My question is, honestly is there a difference between these and let's say the single contact Bosch? (Performance-wise)

My mechanic has owned several e30's, certified by bmw and claims that there is no difference. I have been trying to upgrade as much as my car I can while keeping the original classic look of the car. I upgraded to Conforti chip, Bilsteins and Zimmerman drilled rotors and I am a believer for the suspension/brake upgrade. I like the bottle cap chrome wheels, large bumper, and etc.. so I don't think I'll get the larger wheels , it just doesn't look right to me, must be the affinity towards the original look of the car. My next upgrade will be the UUC short shifter, since I think that the gymbal/mount in my current stock shifter is worn and scratched up, and possibly the strut brace (front) Does this upgrade result in a dramatic difference? Also the K/N filter, which there are 2 versions, one fits the standard rectangular box while the other is the kind that needs the heatshield. I like the fact that they are washable. Is the difference apparent with the K/N upgrade?

Also I was informed that synthetic oil is not so good for these cars since the engines are older and the lubricants in the synthetic oil are smaller so they can leak through very small openings throughout the engine gradually.

I was told that the 4 tip spark plugs are not good for the E30's. I would stick with the single bridged ones and make sure you get the right gap in it. You can also try replacing the wire set it could be old.

bosch plugs are awfull. oh yeah and secondly spark plugs don't add to your performance, your mechanic is right he knows his stuff. Engine performance cannot be added to a car unless its dialed in to the computer so all that extra stuff is just $ being wasted. Get yourself the plugs BMW recommends and wires OEM and your set to go. Also don't bother buying High Energy coils or stuff like that, like I said the performance put in is whats in unless you would reprogram it to take in the new HE coil.

P.S. What I mean by plugs not adding performance is that those fancy smancy platinum and w/e else they sell these days plugs are just plugs that last longer and a nice thing to remember is that when you have 2 dissimilar metals with heat and stuff they tend to like weld and seize together, keep that under your hat next time you wanna change ur plugs 100k miles later [:p]. New plugs feel great because your engines computer doesn't have to compensate and instead is free to run like it used to when it was new.

Bosch plugs are great and all I have used in any of my six BMW's over the years, never had a problem! Do NOT however use +4's in e30's they just do not work right in them. Synthetic oil will work great in any car, however if you have oil leaks they will be larger leaks with a synthetic. My e30 came from BMW with Mobil 1 and that is all I have used in her. If you have a high mileage car that is leaking oil and you have been using dino oils keep using them do not switch without fixing the leaks first.

I definitely agree. I did use dino oil in my E30 (it had 165k when I bought it, had 182k when I wrecked it 11 months later), but my E34 always had synthetic, and it is DEFINITELY healthier than my E30's motor. I too have always used the $3 bosch platinum plugs from autozone. Never had a problem.

I think I just have bad luck with Bosch :(. In other news just always replace your plugs and wires less than 100k miles its best to keep it safe. I used to have a big leak on my vehicle with 180k miles and what I used for a temp fix was a thicker oil instead of my usual 10W-30 and it was a good temp. fix :D

What's that have to do with replacing your plugs every 100k miles?

My favorite plugs that run great are NGK's. They give me better emission numbers than the bosch do. Don't forget BMW also chosed Bosch because they had a contract with them.

Hey guys, I just recently picked up my 91' 318is, and it's been running on 15w40 and is still running strong at the 288k going on 289k mark. It's been my daily driver since I got it and haven't had a single problem with it. It's been running on the thicker stuff because it needs a gasket pretty deep inside, but once I get that fixed I want to try out some synthetic to see how that goes. I dunno if this helps any, but I thought I'd share. And I'd also like to say that this seems to be one of the nicest forums I've come across in my adventures!
