Sport Button?

Hey,

I know that the M3 and the Z4 (and possible some other new BMW's) have a "Sport" button that you push when you feel like being more aggressive. I always thought this was such a stupid feature because the car is a freaking M3 and as Tiff said it best "Why isn't it more sporty all the time?"
Anyways, I was just curious as to the difference between the Sport button on and the Sport button off. I understand that when you push the Sport button, it no longer "limits" throttle response, and perhaps it does other stuff too. From experience, exactly what does the Sport button do for you? Do you normally drive with the Sport button on or off, and what's your preference? How does the Sport button affect the drivability of the car?

Thanks,

Personally I would like to be able to program the sport mode always "on", I love the throttle response. I would think it uses more gas ?? but not sure.

Yeah, I figured it decreases fuel economy and increase emissions, but I'm curious as to how it actually "feels" in terms of driving (acceleration and engine willing-ness).

Big difference....for example if I was driving at around 25mph and press the sports button, I can feel it kick in like a shot of Nitrous.

Works just like Tom says. However, when at WOT, I felt no difference when toggling the sport button on/off. Does anyone have a link or some techincal data about what EXACTLY the sport button does. I've looked in the owners manual and on the net and pretty much everyone says it just improves throttle resonse.

I have read the same & agree. WOT is WOT and you get a max performance either way.

I look at the "sport" mode like in music using a low volume "Bass boost" button, just kinda helps things at lower levels....but then you turn the volume to 10, well there you have it ! bass boost or not 10 is 10 !.

I think the "sport mode" should be emulated more, I would have liked it on some of my former cars.

The MS S54 ECM contains two different throttle progression program curves (Sport and Normal). The Sport switch provides a ground signal as an input when pressed. The ECM activates the sport characteristics for the throttle control. This provides an increase in throttle opening and response time over the non-sport position. I use Sport when driving on surface streets and deactivate it when on the freeway. It's a great feature!

Thanks Joe, that makes sense. Like many others, I'd like the sport mode to be the default setting at start up.
BTW, Your post count is now equal to our HP rating... NICE [cheers]
