I've heard a few things (Opens the throttle more to get more power), but I don't think thats true. All I believe it does is make the gas pedal more sensitive, so you get that extra jump when you hit it.

Basically, it opens up the exhaust and makes the engine work at its full potential....as the driver, it's just much improved throttle response. When the Sport button is not pressed, the engine is working for maximum fuel economy and lowest emissions.....it also makes the car more "drivable" for regular commuting.

I notice no difference in fuel economy. If anything, I notice it getting better when I'm in Sport mode.. Probably because the power response is better, so I don't "flood" the engine as much at low RPMs

Makes sense. The Sport button bothers me, though. I don't know how it is for you guys, but when I hate driving with the A/C running because it makes the car's revs drop much faster than normal. This completely screws up my timing for shifts so I rarely use A/C. This whole summer, I've only used my A/C no more than 10 times, no exaggeration. I start my car up sometimes after having it parked out in the sun for more than an hour so it's really hot and toasty in there...I run the A/C for a few minutes, and then I shut it off and lower the windows. Windows down is the best way to drive. [:)]

No problem. I'm glad you reposted the subject because I was hoping someone could give us some technical data about the actual workings of that button. Here's some info I've found over the past few months:

M5 Sport Button:
Affects steering-feel AND uses a different table for throttle resposne/opening rate

M3
Affects the throttle response/opening rate only

IMO, I don't think our button provides anymore max HP. I base this upon tests at WOT, where I toggle the button on and off. Along the same subjective lines, I've used my GTech and got the same HP reading with the button on and off.

I'd love to see a write-up from BMW to put all our theories to rest though. [cheers]

EDIT: I found this in an article on this site:
http://www.bmwboard.com/articles/view.asp?linkid=389

M Dynamic Driving Control provides Normal and Sport settings for throttle response. In Sport, selected via a console switch, the ratio of throttle opening to pedal movement is increased so that apparent engine response is even quicker. Even the transitional response of the electronic engine controls is altered to suit. Drivers tend to find one or the other setting more to their liking, or choose them according to driving conditions or mood. The system always reverts to Normal when the engine is started.

Hey all,
Well I just got back from getting my new 2005 M3. WHOA!!! I love it. All my girlfriend could say was "this is an awesome car". It is definitely ALOT different from my 2001 530i. Anyways, in the vehicle overview with the sales person, he said that is changes the suspension just slightly, but it is really more for the throttle. He told me to take it up to 4400 rpms with out the sport button off on the interstate, then at 4400 rpm hit the button (turn the "sport" on). He said you will definitely notice a difference in the way the car performs. Of course, I havent done it yet because I am breaking in my baby, but I plan to soon.
Hope all is well.

Despite what the dealer has told you, and as much fun as the sport button is, I have seen nothing to suggest it does anything other than tweak the throttle response...for the better, mind you!
