I have a 86 325ES and I want to put a new engine in. I was thinking about doing a nissan sr20det because it seemed like a pretty easy swap. Has anyone done this or know someone who has?

Yep - I know 4 in nz that are done properly. I could put you intouch with some of the owners, but you'd have to be serious. Do some searching on the web using google as there is plenty of info our there.

Once you have a better idea of what is involved and have specific questions get back in touch and I'll try and help you out.

If you are not a BMW purist so there fore don't mind putting a non-bmw engine in, the sr20det is excellent for e30. Light, good power, easy to tune, fits nicely in the e30 engine bay, tranny and gearshifter lines up.

Far from bolt in and is serious work to do properly.

an m50 swap is easier, but you don't get a lot of bang for buck. M30 gives you good bang for buck, but is too heavy IMO, s50 s14 is too expensive, m52, m54 is pretty expensive for the gains you get.

That is why I am going down the route of forced induction. Convert you ETA motor to an i head, diesel crank etc to get a 327i, and turbo or supercharge it - best bang for buck and since you need to redo the head and crank for the i conversion you can do the work for the boost at the same time.
