Hi, I really hope somebody can give me some info I'm in trouble. Here is the story: My car '87 325e, manual. Two days ago I was driving, suddenly noticed a smoke coming from dash (approx. between radio and glove box). So i killed the car( turned the key into "off") After few sec smoke stopped. I waited for a little bit and tried to start. That's what it does now: When you turn the key into "on" position (without turning the key to "start" position), starter starts to work, so car actually starts! Starter does not go off after car starts, it keeps working. So I have to turn key back to "acc" position to kill the car. I took the glove box and radio off, there is nothing burned as far as I can see. I thought maybe there is a short in ignition switch, so I checked it with ohmmeter for continuity. ignition switch works good. So I checked if the car will start if I would disconnect the starter wire from the ignition lock wiring harness, it did.
I'm not that good in car electrical systems, as far as I understand there is short between starter wire and one of wires that getting power when key is in "on" position, which could be anything. Maybe you have some ideas? Bentley says that manual tranny shouldn't have any relays in ignition-starter starter chain, but then according to one of electrical diagrams from it, the starter wire actually goes to "motronic" block. I tried to disconnect the motronic and turn the key. starter starts working, in " on" position, same as before .. IF not motronic maybe there is some other relay or some thing that could produce some smoke and get a short circuit for starter wire?
Well anyway, any thoughts or ideas would be very appreciated. Thanks

If you have smoke coming out of your dash i think it would be wise to actually find where it came from...

As my old tafe teacher said "Once the smoke comes out, you can't put it back in"

Obvisiously something is burnt out and causing your switch to be funny.
A short to ground is a major possibility, I'd trace those wires back from the switch to the starter.

Im thinking that either your ignition switch, or the starter relay is unservicable. Or the starter solenoid has saddly poo'd itself causing it to stick.
Let us know what happens, or if you figure it out.

Lil sensor on the front right (passenger) side of airbox(not sure what is it) Sensor cover broke off and shorted wires, burned all the way down as far as I can reach, It's in the same wiring branch as starter wire, I can see some insulation is burnt down there..
Thinking about changing the whole thing starting from motronic, I guess It is safer then try to fix this one... Any experience with changing wiring :)? any tricks to it, or something that I should bear in mind?
Thanks
Vitalik
