Stereo volume suddenly blasts

The stereo in my 2002 530i occasionally will suddenly rise in volume. When this happens I cannot turn it down, I can only turn it off. This happens fairly rarely. Later, it will be fine again. Any ideas?

I would suggest talking to the dealer, that isn't normal that's for sure... let us know what they say if you do.
