Ok, i did this particular job with my dad a while back (about a month ago) and decided that i would post a thread on what i did and how we went about removing and painting the rust around the sun roof.

I removed all the seats and the majority of interior (rear seat and backrest, rear shelf, front passenger seat) to make way for A LOT of dust and welding spatter.

We then began by sanding back the paint to uncover all the rust, there was alot more rust than i actually thought when i first purchaced the car about 8 months ago.

cutting out of the rust using my weopon of choice : TINSNIPS!

I was hesitant at first to cut my car but once i got into it, was actually quite fun [:)]

The rust underneath this part of the roof pissed me off. that support for the sunroof has rotted half way along (under the roof panel) i pumped as much fish oil as i could into it, but the rust will be back after time...

Then to hold the bog in place of the huge hole we placed a metal plate underneath which I held from inside the car and dad tack welded it in place from the top. and yes, that is an ice cream container lid we used to fill up the other hole (plastic dont rust [;)] )

Then bogged all the holes up and waited untill it dryed.

sanding the dry bog back...

Unfortuantly while sanding back, debris was floting around and put light scratches in the final job, we thickly sprayed filler onto it and lightly sanded back when it was dry.

after spraying primer, two coats of acrylic opel metalic and one coat of clear the job came up nice, we sprayed to the top of each pillar and used cutting compound to blend the new colour into the old, but hopefully we'll get time to do the entire car at some stage during this year.

Sure,

The rust spot above the front right wheel arch is now deleted...

Engine,

Although my bimmer is one of the slowest out of all my friends, you just cant beat the look of the car, and the sound of that gutless m20... not to mention the e30 handling [:)]

I just learnt today that one of my two mates that owns a 3 series e30 like mine is selling it,
It blows smoke like a turbo'd car thats tuned for 16 pound boost but only spinning 3 pound :(

The engine looks nice and tidy, and the body doesn't look too bad at all. I think the best thing you could do next to improve the appearance would be to replace the old front window seal. Would make it look 10 years newer.
I just took my window washer fluid reservoir out and gave it a cleaning with some AJAX powder... made it look almost brand new!
Who cares if yours is slower... all my friends have bought 1.8T Jetta's, so I'm going to have trouble keeping up, but once I'm in the corners, I'll be right on their tails:)

Yeah, the rear window seal is the same, ive already priced the front and rear trim from bmw and they cost too much.... if i wanted to spend $387 i'd rather spend it on the engine.

I figure ill just get a can of "chrome" paint, tape all around the window and do a bodge job :)

I was also looking into replacing that gasket around the sunroof, that bloody thing is around $307 after trade discount too, didn't end up getting one of those.
Im not too sure about buying stuff off the internet, but its starting to look that way for me if i want cheaper parts.

Nice [hihi]
That's way too much... Are they selling you a new window to go with that? Try going to a windshield replacement shop, they should be able to get you one for a fraction of that price.

Actually I enqired into this not long ago, the gasket is called "H seal" or "H rubber" and the old (i mean old) holdens had it aswell.

Ill see how much "non oem" stuff is and ill get back too you on the price difference :)
