Synthetic Oil? Oil Filter Housing Tricks?

I know this has been covered a thousand times on a thousand forums, but with my 89' 325i, should I go to synthetic oils when she's got 200k+ miles... She runs just fine but would like to prolong the life of her if I can. I have an oil leak at the oil filter housing bracket on the engine, going to replace that seal and that will end any engine oil leaks, then will have to change the oil. Should I go Syn? Let me know your thoughts, and what type of oil would be best in a warmer climate that rarely gets below freezing but can get hotter that 100f... Any tricks you know of to get the oil filter housing off the engine block?? It's leaking at the block.

Synthetics can be used anytime, but yes you want to plug all the leaks first. Or you can simply use Dino oil an dchange it every 3k. I thnk I'd go with Dino and change it every 3k.

So sythetic is the way to go for the high milage bimmer.... Will the Catrol or the Vavoline Syn's be fine? I am just worried that if I change the oil type that this thing will fall apart, hence (if its not broke, dont fix it) saying.. There is no gunk buildup in the motor, I have seen many engines that have crystalized oil and gunk in the valve area, and I just adjusted my valves and obsereved no oil deposits or junk in and around the vavle area...
