Tachometer problem

Hey fellow bmw nuts.

Here is my question. In my 87 325 the tachometer doesnt work. Now this is the third E30 I have owned and I know they have problems with there gauges. But the interesting thing is that right after I shut the car off the tack will jump up to around 1000 rpm and then back down. Now when the car is running it wont budge or twitch at all. The speedo on my 85 318 would atleast jump if I tapped the dashboard, the speedo was not working in that car. I have pulled the guage cluster out of that 318 and I am getting ready to pull it apart and get the tach out of it. But I just wanted to see what anyone had to say about this.

I think the tach is capable of working since it does jump when I turn the car off. The right wire is hooked up to the coil. I think there are speed sensors or relays or something that the lead wire for the tach runs through before it gets to the guage cluster.

Anyone got any imput? Later

Aaron

I know it's either a connection, or a battery -- I cant remember!! I know there are diy links also but cant find them now. Tomorrow, i'll recheck the thread and if nobody posted the links, I'll find it myself.
