The metal bumpers

is there anything i can do to stub these long ass bumpers? can i purchase a bumper from a later year and it bolt on?

If you have the large US bumpers aka diving board bumpers u should be able to replace them with the smaller chrome bumpers. Upgrading to the newer plastic bumpers found on post 1988 e30's is not worth the expense unless you have the fabrication nd welding skills to do it yourself - which if you did I'd hazard a guess you'd have done it already.
