If youre running XP and these are the messenger popups, here's how to get rid of em:

Go to Start
Go to Run
run: "services.msc"
scroll down and look for "Messenger Service"
right click, and click properties
under the "Startup Type" drop down menu click "Disabled"
click "Stop"
exit the properties and exit services.msc

hopefully this should sort out your problems, if those are indeed the popups you are getting.[driving]

Google Toolbar! It is the best Pop Up Blocker out there. I don't get any Pop Ups. Run your ad-aware or Antivirus. Your computer might contain Trojan Horses.

AND DO NOT USE AIM!!!!! Get Yahoo Messenger instead.

Google toobar & others cannot stop pop-ups caused from malware or spyware (which it sounds like you have).

Take bustersandman's advice and get spybot. Update it, use it, and clean out as much as you can. NOTE: there is a good chance you will NOT BE ABLE to get all the offending programs. Create a list of what it couldn't remove, then boot in Command Prompt only mode (Hit F8 BEFORE windows loads to get the boot menu). Then hunt them down via good 'ol command prompt (ie, DOS) commands and delete them. You may not be able to 'see' some of them, have no fear, lookup the ATTRIB command to reveal the pests!!

Once you have everything cleaned up and the pop-ups stop, for the love of pete invest in a good HARDWARE firewall (assuming you use cable/dsl) to stop traffic from entering your network. In addition, be CAREFUL what you download. No Webshots, Atomic clock syncs, etc... If it's a little free utility that looks good, it's more than likely going to induce other things into your system. Trust me, this is what I do for a living (information security)!!

Yeah he is right. I use Spy Bot too. Also get ZoneAlarm Pro. It will help a lot.

Yahoo blows. I only know 2 people that use it. X2 on the [thumbd]

To stop the messenger pop ups in XP/2000:
1. start
2. Control Panel
3. Administrative tools
4. Services
5. DISABLE the messenger service
6. Done

That Mac OS is certainly amazing....I'd used every form of Windows for years and finally switched a year ago....not going back, I can assure you....no viruses, no crashing...and runs all my software...and functions with all sorts of Windows machines on the office network....in a word, virtually perfect.

When everybody starts using Macs, then they'll be targeted with viruses. I doubt it though.

Perhaps...but the one major advantange with the Mac OS is that before ANYTHING is allowed to be installed, you have to enter your administrator password...so any autoinstall viruses have a vastly more difficult task in entering your system without your knowledge.
