Timing belt needed at 60K?

I just brought a 2000 528i and I went to a local "German import" shop and they stated that I should consider a new timing belt as my car has 52K miles on it. I wanted to know if I could wait till I got closer to 60K in miles on the engine. Pleas advise and how much is it for a new timing belt installed?

This is a long winded debate over at the SHO forum. The belt life is dependent on how the belt is tensioned. I have 103k on my car and haven't changed the belt (I have never heard of a SHO's belt snapping). It seems fine. Conversley my friend's A4 belt snapped around 80k I believe. I would get it replaced around 70k. I think (correct me if I am wrong) BMWs have a tensioner that is driven by the oil pressure in the car, and not by a spring loaded tesnioner (like what I have). I would think the cost to replace it would be around $350... I might be wrong though.

I don't think your car has a timing belt, It has a timing chain and usually last the life of the car.....

I used to work for BMW as a portor, and all the engines i saw there. were ran by chains, and the only way i know that will mess up your chain is not keeping up with your oil changes. The chain gets hot and starts to expand which causes the chain to skip the teeth on the cam gears. Maybe he was taking about your accessory belts.

if you have any doubt, i would call the bmw dealer service dept first to find out.

i personally wouldn't trust most of the private shops out there, unless you know the owner personally.

I know the V8's have chains but I'm not sure with the I6's.

I've heard horror stories about timing belts snapping, your whole engine could be messed up! Recommended time to change is 60k but there are cars going up way past that without a replacement. Normal cost is $350 and up but I don't know how much for a BMW.

If I have to replace it, I'd replace it sooner than later. If you gamble, the lost could be big!

The early 325's 84-91 had timing belts, all other BMW's (larger and newer) have timing chains, including the 318's. The cars with belts needed special attention at 50-60k, the others with chains, I am told should last the life of the motor as long as you have kept up with the services.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to make sure that I understood most of your posts. 2000 BMW 528i do not have timing belts, but timing chains that do not need to be changed? I have heard that if a car had a timing belt and it snapped, it would do permanent damage to the engine. If the Bimmers do have chains, that is definitely an added benefit!

Also, I heard that BMW has a full manual on CD for each model and year (such as 2000 528i) which includes all of the part numbers and drawings for repairs. Does anyone know how to access one? If so, I am sure that the timing chain would be described in there. I am very interested in the manual for my BMW too!
