That’s about average for a private party sale. It would be a good deal if it came with a CPO warranty and the complete sports package.

Sounds reasonable. Depending on the build date, the afforementioned "sport package" would not have been available. '97 was the first year for the e39 and although mine has 100% options - which included a "sport pkg" - it's hardly that at all. Expect the steering to be mushy in comparison to a true "M" package which was added later. Check the car out and if it has the M steering, it's a later 97 build - THAT would be a pretty good deal if in great shape. Oh, CPO is not avail - on 97 even with DEMO warranty extension AND CPO it would have lapsed by 2002 or 6yrs after "in-service" date.
