I usually dont post in this forum as i have an E30 318is... BUT a friend of mine is looking at a 1988 535i. The particular car he's looking at needs a new transmission and he wanted to know which transmissions would fit on that car (if there are more than one). It doesn't reall matter if the new transmission is automatic or manual, but he would prefer that the car be manual. Also, if anyone has done a automatic to manual swith on their 5 series more information would be appreciated.

A transmission conversion (auto to manual) is on a "per car" basis and is usually custom. It will cost several thousand dollars, but I don't want to be any more specific than that. There are some articles on 7-series owners who have done the auto-to-manual conversion, but I'm not familiar with any 5-series conversions. Have you found any places that will do it?

Like MrElussive said, its not a inexpensive ordeal. The conversion is very popular with 7 series owners, paticularly E23s. I have tackled both E23/E28 conversions and rounding up all the necessities in good condition is crucial. Main issues are the tranny, driveshaft, foot pedal assy./ clutch hydrualics, and some wiring, neutral safty switch/ instrument cluster because of the brains signal of gear selection. If its a go let me know how it turns out !!!!
