I was driving my car the other day and when i shifted into 2nd gear i hit it pretty hard and I heard a crack noise or something, (it was hard ti hear since the music was really loud), and after that the shifter seemed really loose in all the grears, about a day later all the top gears stoped working, ot it just wont go into gear and i only have 2nd and 4th. When it is in 2nde and 4th the shifter is normally where neutral is and if I can get it into gear the shifter is soo far upthat it hits the surounding. also isnt hard to put into reverse position when you push the shifter to the left it just goes without and problem?

Please help!!!

Transmission Woes

Hello josho44,
Sounds like whatever the problem is, your going to have to remove the transmission. Then worry about fixing it or finding another one to replace it.

Technically, it could be the front bearing on the lower gear cluster. When the bearing goes out, it lets the shaft drop away from the main gear cluster. Case damage is typical when this bearing pops. Don't think it's a shifter linkage problem, never know until you start taking things apart. What car is this on? Bang'in gears with a guibo isn't the coolest thing to do.

my car

it is on my 89 325i, I took the shift boot and that little rubberthingy at the bottom of the shifter off so I could see and now you can see that the linkage are is completely broken in half. I still thing it may have there problems now but that is thw only visable thing I can see.

I bet money its a matter of YOU NEED A SHORT SHIFT KIT! [:p]

I installed a short shift kit and when removing the old 18 year old shifter it disintigrated in my hand. Not only did it shorten the throw but made it easier to get into gear because the old shifter was soo sloppy.

It could be as cheap as replacing the (2) bushings. I had the same problem and took my 84 BMW to mom and pop's transmission shop. $240.00 later it shift smoothly. I thought about replacing the shifter for a short one. Didn't have the funds to do it. They charged me 3 hours of labor at a rate of $65.00/hr here in Beatiful San Diego, Ca.
