I have a groan coming from the left side of my 86 325es. Gets noticeable about 35 to 45 mph. Putting in the clutch does not change anything. Noise goes away when turning left at speed. Noise is there when going straight.

Lifted the left side of the car. Front wheel appears okay. Rear wheel seems locked up. Difficult to turn with tire on. Nearly impossible with tire off. Pulled the brake rotor off, but no effect so it is not a dragging brake.

Wheel bearing?

that would be my first guess. Jack the car up put a stand under it (make it safe) and try to wiggle the wheel back and forth.. (back and forth meaning try to rotate back and forth like you are trying to steer the car. ) on the front wheel wiggle it up and down (like you are adjusting the camber) (otherwise you'll feel steering play. ) If there is any play, your bearing is bad.
