I'm going to take a look tonight at a 2002 X5 with 22K mi on it. It has premium, sport, & cold weather pkgs. It also has navi. The asking price is $39,990 (not at a BMW dealer, so not CPO). What should I be looking for to make sure that I don't get screwed??

btw...I'm a BMW newbie, so I don't know much about them overall....

THanks for you help!

******* Transmission Problems To Come******* No Warnings, And Bmw America Will Not Stand Behind Repair. Make Sure You Get An Extended Warranty. My Reverse Gear Just Suddenly Went Out @ 60k Mile On A 01 4.4i.

Ok, where to start:

Radiator, water pump, thermostat housing leaks/failures if it's a 3.0i, (the 4.4i & 4.6i's don't seem to have the same prob), ball joints, squeaks and rattles from the interior, door lock actuators, window regulators, and transmissions.

Not saying that they are ALL going to fail, but that is the most common probs found. ;)

I agree with abdoman. If you can afford a $40,000 car, you can buy it from the dealer with a warranty. At 22k miles it should still have the warranty going on it. ENSURE that if you are going to buy it, you have all that stuff transferred overi n your name so you won't have a problem in the future if you have to take it in......an you will because it's a BMW. I would spend maybe $100 - $200 and take it to a certified BMW shop and have them inspect it thoroughly before purchasing
