Vanos Noise!!!!!

Well after changing my oil the other day. I noticed at 2100 rpm there was a lot of noise coming from the front of my engine. No really sure how long the noise has been there, I just noticed it. Sounds to me like a bad vanos unit, chain tensioner, or timing chain. The noise goes away with more rpm. The VANOS unit has been replaced once before at about 45000 miles. The car has about 75000 miles on it now. I take really good care of the car. Oil change wvery 3000 miles with Mobil 1 Syn, tranny fluid changed every 10000, diff fluid changed every 15000, coolant flush every 1 1/2, brake flush every 1 year, and I hardly ever get a check engine light. When there is it is always taken care of. What else could be causing this terrible noise? Cause last time I spent like 650.00 on a new VANOS unit plus labor. My friend owns a BMW/Porsche/MB service shop. So we are goiung to take it all apart on Wednesday. We will see what needs to be done. Any advice? Please post!!! [B)] [confused] [thumbd]

Where approximatly is the VANOS unit located?
You're a mechanic and you can't figure out where a valve timing system could possibly be located?! I don't mean to be a dick or anything, but sometimes I'm just shocked. If you're a mechanic wouldn't you be able to at least have the knowledge to search GOOGLE for some answers? [rolleyes]

You know not everyone knows everything about every car.

Well yes and no. Not all engines are alike but all have some sort of timing system and its basically in the same location on each engine...

I would get a mechanics stehescope to pinpoint the noise. They're cheap and real nice to have.

The vanos unit is located at front of the engine. Where the black plastic cover ends. The noise is the secondary chain tensioner. I'm getting it fixed tomorrow.

Okay, a quote from your website which makes me wonder how YOU dress yourself in the morning.

"Today, cars are so complex, many times I believe the engineers that design them don't completly understand them. "

I don't know if you know any engineers - but if someone DESIGNED something, how could they NOT completely understand it? They obviously understand it becuase they DESIGNED it. [bash] Explain how someone could design something, but NOT understand it. My dad - and a few members HERE are engineers, and I'm pretty sure they'll tell you they understand what they do...becuase it's what they do.

after replacing the both chain tensioners. Both timing chains. VANOS unit. I found out that it was the helix gear. This is the gear inside the intake cam gear. But it did need a vanos unit. Then car does feel a little faster. Reason for the vanos going out so early, was when I installed the M50 manifold I hooked the crankshaft position harness up backward. I figured this problem out about 2 months ago. It was the reason for the vanos and helix gear wearing out and making noise. Cost me about 1000.00 for everything. Alot of those connectors have the same hook up. Never had a check engine light. Be careful. I even had a BMW tech help with installation of the manifold. This screw up also made the car not want to start on the first try. So it had to adapt then it would start on the third try. After hooking evertything up right the car still would not start so I cleared the adaptions then it started. Now everything is fixed and hook up like it is supposed to.

Vavle cover gasket
VANOS Unit
Primary and secondary timing chain
Primary and seconday chain tensioners
Intake cam gear
I good friend of mine that owns a job only charged me for 4 hours of labor.
