This only seems to happen when I first start the car up in the morning. But after about 2 minutes of running I start hearing a chirping sound that seems to be coming from under the dash around the glove box. It sounds like a baby bird chirping but every now and then it will get louder and faster and actually sounds like the typical police whistle. The loudness is enough to hear it over the radio at normal level or over the A/C. At first I thought it might be the A/C, but I turned it completely off and it still made the noise. It has happened every day for the last five days. It has been intermitent for about two weeks. I'm taking it in on Saturday but as it always happens it probably won't repeat for the service man to check. :)

Any ideas what it might be? Thanks and Aloha, chieftd

Do you park your car outside at night? During the winter, the few days I had to park my whip outside at night (because the driveway was too icy to get up), I would go to it the next morning and start it up. For the first few minutes of driving, I also get the whistling sound you're getting. My sounds are coming from the engine coolant just heating up and I'm assuming your car is experiencing the same thing. In any case, I don't think it is anything to worry about...if the car drives fine and there are no check engine lights lit up, I would just take it as normal.

Do you feel any other symptom with the engine, like jerking or "bubbling" during acceleration? (As if the choke was on in the old cars)
If so, it could be the oil separator...sound of vacuum leak.

Don't think it makes a difference in Hawaii.

If that happened here, I would first suspect a marter (wiesel) because they like BMWs too.

However they like to eat them more than riding [driving] so by the second day I would know wasn't a marter if the car still started.

So don't know, it could be many things.[???1]

Thanks for the replies. The car is an automatic. I took it to the dealer and as always they couldn't duplicate, so it wasn't fixed. That was 4 days ago and it has made noise every day since. Its getting worse too as in more often and for longer periods. Two days ago it made the noise long enough for me to nail down where it seems to be coming from and that is under the glove box on the right side wall forward of the passenger door. The car is not experiencing any other symptoms, no loss of power, no hesitation, no other noises. It used to do it just in the mornings but over the last 3 days it has done it at various times of the day and it has lasted as long as 10 minutes per incident. It will then stop and then occasionally chirp or whistle. Its really getting annoying. I just hope this next time it will replicate for the technician. Thanks, chieftd
