My voice-activation on my 2004 545i (with NAV) does not work. The dealership cannot tell if it is operational on the car. My car seems to be one of the first 545i with NAV my dealership has delivered and they are clueless. Someone told me there will be a software upgrade to active this feature. Does anyone know about this? The Idrive would be much more functionable with voice-activation.

My understanding is that there is, in fact, a software upgrade to enable voice activation.

I'm pretty sure it's available -- I'm surprised your dealer can't get clear information on how to handle this.

Others have it working fine once they got the software upgrade.

Both the dealership and BMWUSA.com have told me that the voice-activation in the 2004 E60 will be operational with a software upgrade. They couldn't tell me when it will be available. I was getting upset because the dealership could not get me info on this issue and other cars costing much less money (Acura TL) have the NAV and voice-activation. I feel it is necessary for the voice-activation on the E60 because some simple functions that you will be able to accomplish easily with the voice-activation are a pain with the Idrive.

Did they tell you this recently? I seen posts on other boards where they've already received the software upgrade and voice activation works fine.

You and your dealer may have old information.

I was told last week by both the dealership and BMWUSA.com about the upcoming voice-activation software upgrade. This was the response from BMWUSA on 3/21 (which was similar to what the dealership told me):

"Thank you for contacting BMW North America, LLC in regards to voice activation for your 5 Series. We are currently working to develop the software to use the voice activation in your vehicle. The best suggestion I have for you is to keep in contact with your local BMW center's service department for the latest updates.

Thank you for choosing BMW. If you have any further questions, please respond to this e-mail or contact the Customer Relations Department at 1-800-831-1117, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time."

My dealership is totally clueless about every issue I have asked them regarding my new 545i. This is a different dealership than I have used over the last 18 years. I love this car but I am becoming extremely frustrated about getting my questions answered. Is there someone out there who has a new E60 with the voice-activation operational?

Thanks

Talked to my Dealer today regarding the software to activate voice commands. The service tech I spoke to just came back from training in NJ on the electronics of the acr. He said the software, version 12, is in debug mode in Germany and is scheduled for release in August. He said version 11 is very buggy.

I've used version 11 for just a few days now and it seems okay -- recognition could probably be more accurate but it could also be me at the beginning of my learing curve, etc.

The good news is it works with 11.

I am now totally convinced the service techs are clueless on the software. How can you determine the care's software version?
I've seen this question asked many times but never saw the answer.

It's true that the clueless factor varies greatly between dealers. I've not had too many problems with mine but they've told me that there are times when they do everything exactly as prescribed and things don't work. Then they have to contact BMW and sometimes it takes them some time to get back to them, etc.

Version 11 may be buggy and 12 will probably be better but for now, ver 11 seems acceptable for now. Good luck with whatever ends up happening with your car.

Help! just bought a 2004 525i without navigation and wasn't told I had to buy the cell phone for $1,000 to have the voice activation to work.

Now I find that the car is prewired for voice activation, again you need to buy the motorola v60 phone.

Any info out there?
