Web-Site profitability?

I was wondering, is it realistic to make income of-off your website by attracting advertisers? Say you have a web-site that gets a high traffic volume, could you approach advertisers and offer them to place ads on your site in exchange for money? Isn't this how the site works? I doubt the owners actually pay money to maintain the site without making any profit. It is a free service for us, so they can't make any money off that, so I'm guessing the ads are paying the fees. If it is at all possible, I would want to try it out. I'm knowledgeable in computer programming, so a web-site with programming tutorials might be of interest to a lot of people and may create high traffic volume.

What does everyone think of this?

It is doable, but you need a LOT of traffic if you want to actually make a $$ living from it. If you want a few extra random bucks, then it's pretty easy. The easiest is just linking to other sites that have a commission program. If someone clicks from your site AND buys you get a small % of the sale.

Getting paid upfront by advertisers? The advertisers will want to see verifiable traffic statistics before they give you money.

Here's an example of how it works - http://www.industrybrains.com/programmersheaven

Maybe one of operators of this board can give some insight. Look at the top of this page. That's what they are doing.

It can work, and there are some web site companies that set the whole thing up for you. Usually you do need statistics showing how much traffic your web site gets.

Hey! [wave]

Unlike common belief, it is very hard to create a for-profit website from scratch. Times had past when you can put together a site and expect to generate income from advertising. One reason for this are the web giants that came to dominate the internet world. The other is the ever-changing advertising market. You are no longer paid just for displaying a banner on your site or the number of impressions it gets (like you did in mid 1990s)... webmasters are paid now on a hard-core sales they bring to the client.

Another thing before creating a site is that you should be aware of whats already up there. Large giants are now in control of a very large majority of internet traffic and are rendered dominant by popular search engines such as google. New sites (unless they are very exclussive in content) have a stiff fight over internet placement. You cannot just create a site and hope for the best, you have to build a "network" between other sites if you want for it to be moving upwards. Now large brothers network together and direct traffic between themselves for $$ reasons. Some argue that the only real profit-making markets out there are adult, casino, and hard-core marketers (like me included). One expert estimates that over 80 percent of all websites fail to show up on any search engines, making them virtually impossible to find, and the situation may only get worse.

There is an uphill battle and if you think you can fight it,.. go ahead. Amateur sites cost almost nothing now a days.. it is your personal time and investment that is your major cost. Its hard to get traffic,.. So far I am getting about 5,000 new people everyday (~2-3 million hits/month) to my domains and it took years to establish that. Yahaoo gets about 15 million per day.. in comparison to Google GOD that grosses over 175.

Thats very interesting, I know that it is a hard battle and I'm not looking to make a living out of this(although I wouldn't mind if I could), just a way to make my car payments[:D] Sort of walk in Pavel's foot steps[fake]

PAVEL:

I will be working on a fully exlusive erotic art website hopefully in the near future. It costs a lot of money to get going for model photoshoots cost between 1-2K... but it is my life's dream and work I would rather love to do. I will use partial current earnings to investing in that. My destination, something like: M E T - A R T . c o m. The guy is a genious. I really appreciate his work.
